Everything you enter in AbleseBar is stored exclusively on your device:
The app never transmits this data to us or to third parties (for Android's device backup see point 4). Consumption, costs and the difference to your instalments are not stored; they are calculated from readings and cost rates.
Every profile and the guest access have their own data space: what you enter as a guest is invisible to a profile — and vice versa.
If you photograph a meter or pick an image from your gallery, the digits are recognised exclusively on your device (Google ML Kit, on-device text recognition — without an internet connection). Only the value you confirm in the correction view is saved. The app does not store the photo among its data and never transmits it; the image file stays in the app's cache on your device until Android clears it or you uninstall the app. Manual entry is an equally valid path — the app is fully usable without a camera.
Importing meter readings, cost rates and base data from a CSV file works entirely locally: the file you choose is read and stored on the device — nothing is transmitted.
If you export your data as CSV or create a backup, the app creates a file and hands it to your device's share function. Where that file goes — and whether you put it into cloud storage — is entirely your decision; the app transmits it nowhere and we never see it. Restoring a backup reads the file on the device.
Android backup: AbleseBar does not switch off Android's automatic backup. If backup to your Google account is enabled on your device, Android includes the app data — including the profile email and password check value — in that backup, restores it after a reinstall and may transfer it when you switch devices. This is controlled by Android through your account alone; the app itself sends nothing, and we see none of it.
Recording, statistics, text recognition and import/export work entirely without internet. Our own code makes a connection in one case only:
This version has no purchase and no subscription. We include no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting services and have no social network interfaces. Text recognition (ML Kit), however, brings a transport component by Google into the app which, according to Google, may send encrypted technical usage data to Google (such as device model, system version, app package and version, a per-installation identifier, performance figures and error codes) — without any action by the app and with no way to switch it off. The photo, the recognised digits and your data are not part of it. We have no influence over that and receive nothing from it.
If you create a profile, your password is never stored in plain text, only as a non-reversible, salted SHA-256 check value. Signing in separates the data of different profiles on the same device. It is not protection against someone holding your unlocked device, nor a substitute for device encryption — that is what your screen lock is for.
AbleseBar requests no location, contacts, microphone or camera permission of its own: photos are taken by your device's camera app, and images are chosen via the system photo picker; the app only ever sees the single image you select.
The app declares two system permissions: internet access, which our own code uses only for the update check in point 5 and which Google's ML Kit component also uses, and — only during the testing phase outside the stores — installing a downloaded version. In addition there is an app-internal AndroidX identifier that unlocks nothing. The network-state query that a bundled component would request is explicitly switched off.
You delete individual meters, readings and cost items in the app. You remove a profile together with all its data in your profile via "Delete account and data". Everything on the device is removed when you uninstall the app or clear its storage in your device's settings under "Apps". If Android backup is enabled on your device, a copy of the app data may remain there, which Android restores after a reinstall; you manage that copy in the backup settings of your device or Google account. As we never receive any data, there is nothing for us to delete.
The app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.
As no personal data is transmitted to us, the rights to access, rectification, erasure and data portability (Art. 15–20 GDPR) have no subject matter on our side — we simply hold no data about you. Your data is yours alone, on your device.
The app uses free software components, among others Flutter and ML Kit by Google. The Material symbols come from Google and are licensed under CC BY 4.0.
If the scope of the app changes, this policy will be updated. The date above states the currently valid version.
